A county boasting some of the most up and coming cities, waiting to be rediscovered.

Profile

Probably the best place to visit would have to be Newcastle, a city once at the forefront of 19th century industrial innovation. Now the cities Quayside is lined with stylish hotels, designer bars, award-winning restaurants and public art. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge arches across the Tyne river to link the city centre to the Baltic Centre of Contemporary Art.
There are also plenty of modern hotels, that are accompanied by pleasantly surprising prices. Go a bit further away from the busy towns and Tyne and Wear has a decent amount of castles, country houses and old, picturesque villages, such as Alnwick Castle, Bamburgh Castle and Warkworth Castle, and of course one of the newest editions to the skyline, the Angel of the North, located at Gateshead.

Gay Scene
Tyne and Wear's gay scene is much based in Newcastle, around Central Station, where the local council is toying with the idea of a “gay village”, rather than commercial growth like that of Manchester.
Only time will tell whether the idea will receive enough investment, but until then, the area is already filling up with gay bars, pubs, and restaurants. Zinc Bar in Times Square and The Yard Bar on Scotswood Road are probably amongst the best.
